Every great party begins with great planning. But where to start? From the guest list and venue down to the decor, food, and music, every aspect of planning a party requires equal thought and attention. Sure, planning a party may be a little daunting. But it needs to be done — and done right — if you want to make your night a success. Here are the top six tips you can use to plan the perfect party and give your guests a night to remember.

1. Choose your guest list

Your first decision should be how big or small you want your party to be. A good party should have more than your usual gang of friends in attendance — otherwise you could just schedule a low-key hang out like you always do. A party should be seen as a unique chance for your guests to make new friends, enjoy themselves, and have some great conversation. The best sort of guest list should therefore include some of your usual friends (and maybe some family members) along with a handful acquaintances you want to get to know better. If you have the room, let everyone know they can bring a plus one, too.

2. Choose a theme

A theme is the easiest way to set the desired mood and ambience for your party. Your theme may be as simple as a specific colour, holiday, season, or someone’s birthday. You could even go all-out and throw a costume party (which are great for Halloween). Whatever theme you decide upon, it will function to set your party apart from the rest and make it a truly special night your guests will remember.

3. Choose a venue

If your party’s on the smaller side, you may want to make it an more intimate event held in your home. Alternatively, if you have a larger number of guests coming, you may want to book a grand venue, such as a ballroom, dining room, club, or bar. Make sure you’re happy with the venue before you decide to book it — and do so well in advance to avoid disappointment.

4. Choose the decor

Think about the decor you’ll need to make your party complete. You need to have enough tables and seating to accommodate your guests. Candles and floral centrepieces are charming additions to the tables. Lighting is another important decor aspect that helps set the right mood (dim — but not too dark — lighting is usually perfect for a party). Finally, the right table linen can really pull the room together and impress all the party-goers. Your table linen should be of good quality, the right size for your tables, and fit your colour scheme.

5. Choose the music

Every party needs the right playlist. You may prefer to create your playlist, so you can throw in some songs you know everyone will love. Alternatively, you may want to use a streaming service like Spotify, which has a number of themed playlists ready to use. Simply search through them to find the one that best suits your night. Be sure to keep the music low-key and the volume quiet enough so people can talk naturally. Just turn things up when it’s time to dance. If you’re hosting a bigger event, you can even go all out and hire a good DJ instead.

6. Choose the food

When it comes to food, you don’t want to choose anything that’s too complicated and time-consuming to cook. You want to be socialising with your guests and not hidden away in the kitchen for hours. Go with food options that are delicious, simple, and satisfying. Make sure you cater for any guests that may have allergies or food restrictions. To avoid people going hungry, always have snacks out for people to enjoy as they please. If you especially dislike cooking, or just don’t want the hassle, you can even hire a caterer to take care of the food for you.
Following the above six tips will help you throw a party that’s a rip-roaring success. Putting in the effort to get everything just right will really pay off. Not only will you and your guests all have a blast, but you’ll create some great memories — and hopefully make some closer friends in the process. A great party will automatically ensure you receive a tonne of return invites, as well as have people talking about it for days and day to come.
